Abstract

1,155,611. Patterned velours type fabrics. BADISCHE ANILIN-& SODA-FABRIK A.G. 24 June, 1966 [26 June, 1965], No. 28372/66. Heading DIP. A relief pattern is produced on a material having a velours type surface layer of cellulose or regenerated cellulose, e.g. cotton or viscose rayon, by applying to the areas where the velours type surface layer is to be completely or partially destroyed, the areas corresponding to the pattern to be produced, no resist agent having previously been applied to the material, a paste containing an acidic substance capable cf carbonising cellulose fibres on heating, drying the material, heating the material to burn out the pattern, washing the material to remove the carbonised matter and drying. The material treated may be velvet, cord, plush or a fabric or sheeting flocked with cellulose fibres, the backing for flocked materials being made from synthetic polyesters, polyurethanes, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polypropylene, cellulose acetate, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, paper or cotton. In the case of flocked materials the adhesive for bonding the flock to the backing may be an aminoplast or polyacrylate and the material may be produced by mechanical or electrostatic flocking. The flock may comprise a mixture of cellulosic fibres with fibres indestructible under the conditions of the process e.g. polyacrylonitrile fibres. The acidic substance which is applied in the form of a paste which may comprise thickeners, e.g. tragacanth, sodium polyacry late or polyvinylmethyl ether, and anti-foaming agents, e.g. triisobutyl phosphate, and may be applied by screen printing or roller printing, may be sulphuric acid, aluminium chloride or sulphate, or a naphthalene sulphonic acid. The material is dried after treatment with the acid, heated preferably for 1-5 minutes at 100‹-140‹C, washed and dried. The printing paste may contain dyes which permanently colour the layer of flock and/or the backing under the conditions of the process.
