Abstract

A piezo-electric or piezo-resistive element is mounted on, or in, a flexible strip which is secured at its ends in such a way as to produce a compressive force along the length of the strip. The strip is coupled to a diaphragm or stylus so that displacement thereof cause buckling of the strip. The compressive force in the strip is said to reduce the energy required to operate the transducer. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which a diaphragm 1 is coupled to a strip 6 by a pin 4 of aluminium or titanium. Strip 6 is of steel, alloy or glass, and carries a piezo resistive element 7 of p-type silicon. The mounting of the strip 6 is such that the strip is under compression as indicated by the arrows C. In practice the diaphragm 1 may be mounted in an aperture on one side of a frame and the strip secured to the other side of the same frame and the pin may be replaced by a pip formed at the apex of the diaphragm. More than one element may be used, mounted, as shown in Fig. 3, to be positively and negatively curved and connected in a bridge circuit. In this arrangement the coupling member is formed as a bridge 14 which tends to amplify the displacement applied to the element.
