Abstract

1,154,981. Typewriters &c. ING. C. OLIVETTI & C. S.p.A. 16 Jan., 1967 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 2161/67. Heading B6F. Justifying arrangements; power assisted type actions.-A power operated typewriter having a part-revolution clutch 36, Fig. 1, proportional letter spacing pawls 13 and a pair of space bars 63, 73 for effecting two different spaces between words is provided with a justification mechanism comprising a pair of settable knobs 141, 153, Fig. 3, provided with scales to set the knobs from a rest position to a position corresponding to the correction required for justifying the line, the set knobs being restored stepwise on depression of either of the space bars 63, 73 which are inhibited from effecting the spacing allotted to them. To effect justification of a line a predetermined part of the line is typed in the usual manner whereupon a lever 108 is rocked to inhibit link 117 which normally pivots a lug 122 on bail 120 into the path of pawl slide 14 and to prevent type bar action. The remaining part of the line is then typed but without type bar action and the number of spaces determined. The lever 108 is restored and carriage returned to the position at which the lever was rocked. Assuming that the justified line is to be shortened the knob 141, Fig. 4, is set anticlockwise by a number of spaces indicated on the knob dial, the knob being urged to its rest position by a spiral spring 144 and prevented from rotation by a dog 172, Fig. 2, of a pallet dog 173 common to both knobs 141, 153. Setting of the knob 141 displaces a locking pawl 139 on lever 135 engaging a notch 140 in the knob to pivot bail 132 and its associated lug 131 to release the projection 129 on a crank lever 128 secured to shaft 54, the crank lever 128 permitting a spring biased lever 124, Fig. 3, to follow cam 41 and displace the link 117 rearwardly and thereby pivot a lug 122 on a bail 120 into the path of lug 123 on the slide 14, when any one of the space bars 63, 73 has been depressed and the clutch 36 engaged due to rocking of bails 53 and 38. The link 117 also rocks the shaft 54 through a link 118, counterclockwise rocking of the shaft 54 causing consequent rocking of a lever 176 fast with the shaft, Fig. 5, to rock the pallet dog 173 and cause the knob 141 to be stepped back by one tooth space of the rachet wheel 168, Fig. 3, integral with the knob 141. Interposition of lug 122 into the path of lug 123 of slide 14 causes the carriage 11 to letter space two unit spaces. Assuming that the justification line is to be lengthened the knob 153 is set, whereby the bail 132 is rocked by lever 136 to free the crank lever 128 as described above. The lever 136, however, is associated with a bail 149 having an arm 159 whose lug 160 inhibits the lever 117 and prevents the lever 124 from following the cam 41 and presenting lug 122 into the path of lug 123 on the slide 14. Depression of any space bar 63, 73 causes bail 53 to rock bail 66, which is coupled to the bail by a latch 167, thereby lever 75 causes its shoulder 76 to be removed from engagement with lug 77 of the bail 78 which displaces the slot 83 into a position in which the cam controlled crank arm 86 can effect displacement of the sector 18 corresponding to a three unit spacing as described in conjunction with the operation of space bar 73. Variable letter-spacing arrangements.-Following depression of a key (not shown) the carriage 11, Fig. 1, is letter spaced by one, two or three unit spaces depending on the character associated with the depressed key. Letter spacing is effected by a cam 33 rotated by a clutch 36 to pivot an arm 24 attached to a shaft 23 through the intermediary of bell-cranks 28, 25, whereby the shaft 23 and its associated lugs 22 are rocked to disengage the pawls 13 from the rack 12 and permit the pawl slide 14 to move into engagement with a sector 18 which has been meanwhile rotated by a crank arm 21 by cam 103 controlled lug 98 of bail 96 to a position corresponding to the associated letter spacing. The arm 24 is then rocked anticlockwise to reengage the pawls 13 with the rack 12 and the carriage 11 is then letter spaced through a distance corresponding to the movement of slide 14 which is restored to its rest position. Sector 18 is stationary for letter spacing corresponding to the units. Space-bar key actions.-The typewriter is provided with two space bars 63, 73, Fig. 1, which on depression displace the carriage 11 by two or three unit spaces, respectively, between successive words. Depression of the two unit space bar 63 causes bail 53 to be rocked clockwise by the projection 58 of lever 59. Then a latch 49 pivotally mounted on a pin 52 on the bail 53 rocks a lever 45 anticlockwise releasing lug 42 of bail 38 which is rocked anticlockwise by a spring 43 to disengage lug 37 from the clutch 36, which is free to rotate a sleeve 33 mounting cams 32, 41, 103. Simultaneously a bail 78 is rocked anticlockwise until its lug 77 engages a shoulder 76 of a lever 75, the rocking of bail 78 being started by upward movement of a lug 81 on the bail 38 engaged by a lug 79 on the bail 78. Rocking of bail 78 displaces a slot 84 into a position at which a pin 85 of a cam-operated lever 86 is arrested soon after the sleeve 33 has started to rotate so that the bell-crank 89 associated with a crank arm 91 disposes the lug 93 on the arm 91 in the path of lug 95 of cam 103 operated bail 66 which is rotated insufficiently to cause displacement of a pin 99 on the crank arm 21 so that the sector 18 remains stationary. Concomitant rotation of the cam 32 has meanwhile rocked bell-cranks 28, 25 which through arm 24 and shaft 23 have pivoted lugs 22 to cause the latter to pivot the pawls 13 out of engagement with the rack 12, whereupon the pawl slide 14 is displaced by its associated spring 16 into abutment with the sector 18 through the intermediary of the lug 17. Thereafter the pawls 13 re-engage the neck 12 which restores the slide 14 to its rest position after it has been displaced leftward by two unit spaces. Depression of the three unit space bar 73 causes a lug 69 on the lever 71 to rock bail 66 through associated lugs 68 and arm 67, the bail 66 rocking the bail 53 by means of the lug 64 to release the clutch 36 for a cycle as described above and removing the shoulder 76 on the lever 75 by rocking the latter anticlockwise to permit the bail 78 to displace the slot 84 in the link 83 forwardly so that the lever 86 can follow the cam 103 and pivot the nose 94 on the arm 91 into the path of lug 95 on the bail 96 thereby causing the lug 98 which engages the pin 99 on crank arm 21 to pivot the latter by an amount required for the sector 18 to present to the lug 17, on the pawl slide 14, an abutment which corresponds to three unit spaces.
