Heading B1X [Also in Division C3] Apparatus for the production of polymerisation and polycondensation products comprises one or more reaction vessels connected in series in which the reactants are continually mixed and passed through the apparatus by the action of worms 12, 12' 13, in the vessel(s), so that the reaction mixture passes through successive charging reaction and collecting sections in the apparatus and is finally discharged from the collecting section, by means of worm 7, worms 12 being constructed to brush against the inner wall of housing 1 and to brush against each other in a selfcleaning action. There may be holding or compacting sections between the charging, reacting and collecting sections, and the sections may be provided with jackets for heat transfer media. There may be pressure regulated sluices between the sections. The worms may be provided with passages for heat transfer media, and may have reduced thread pitch or depth at border zones between sections. The sections of the apparatus may be in vertical sequence, the worms being mounted on a common spindle supported only at one end. The collecting section may be connected to the charging section by an external pipe, outside the reacting section, for recycling unreacted monomer. The apparatus of Fig. 4 (not shown) is for use in high pressure polymerisation.
