Abstract
1,154,921. Carboxylic esters. S. TOGASHI, and H. YAMADA. 7 June, 1966, No. 25392/66. Heading C2C. Carboxylic esters are prepared by the esterification of an aliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic or heterocyclic carboxylic acid, or the anhydride thereof, with an alcohol, by heating in the presence of a peroxide and an inorganic acid, organic acid or ion-exchange resin as catalyst the mole ratio of the peroxide to carboxylic acid or anhydride being from 0À01 to 0À6 : 1 and the reaction temperature being in the range 75- 105‹ C. Examples are given of the preparation of methyl and ethyl formates; ethyl esters of acetic, propionic and valeric acids; methyl esters of caprylic, caproic, lauric, myristic and palmitic acids; isoamyl and secondary butyl acetates; isobutyl butyrate; ethylene glycol dipropionate; benzyl acetate; ethylene glycol diacetate; glycerol triacetate; benzyl butyrate; phenylethyl formate and propionate; furfuryl acetate; dibutyl and dimethylphthalates; methyl benzoate; methyl and phenyl salicylates; methyl p-nitrobenzoate; methyl, isoamyl and benzyl cinnamates; tetrahydrofurfuryl benzoate; diallyl phthalate; methyl iso-nicotinate; ethyl furan-2-carboxylate; methyl 2-phenyl quinolin-4-carboxylate; isoamyl - furan - 2 - carboxylate; benzyl furan-2- carboxylate; t-butyl thiophene-2-carboxylate and (2-hydroxyethyl)-thiophene-2-carboxylate.
