Abstract

1,154,528. Porous alumina. PRODUITS CHIMIQUES PECHINEY-SAINT-GOBAIN. 18 April, 1967 [19 April, 1966], No, 17803/67. Heading C1A. Porous alumina conglomerates having a uniform pore size variable within the range 100-1000 Š are prepared by calcining boehmite (α-alumina monohydrate) having a specific surface of 150 to 600 m<SP>2</SP>/g., such as that prepared by the method of U.K. Specification 1,065,733, at a temperature from 900‹ to 1500‹ C. for from 30 minutes to 5 hours. The pore diameter increases regularly as a function of temperature until about 1200‹ C. when there is a sudden rise to about 1000 ‰. Thereafter increased temperature causes a decrease in pore size until at 1500‹ C. the open porosity disappears giving a virtually unreactive product. The conglomerates, which may be formed into sheets, tubes, or rods by moulding, extrusion, slip casting, or pressing the alumina prior to calcination, are suitable for use for the separation of macromolecules in the liquid or gas phase.
