Abstract

1,154,219. Testing coins. CANADIAN PATENTS & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 13 Dec., 1966 [18 Jan., 1966], No. 55830/66. Headings G4V and G4X. A method of testing coins and selecting those coins of a predetermined denomination irrespective of whether the coins contain magnetic or non-magnetic material comprises passing an alternating magnetic field through the coin to be tested, detecting the variation in field strength due to the coin and applying the detected signal to discriminating means so that coins causing a variation within predetermined limits are accepted and all others rejected, the frequency of the magnetic field being chosen so that the variation in field strength will be substantially the same for both types of coin of said predetermined denomination. The coin 19 passes between an energizing circuit 22 generating an alternating magnetic field and a detection winding 25. An additional winding 27 encircling the coin may be connected in series with the detection winding. The alternating voltage induced in the winding 25 is rectified and applied to peak detectors 30, 31. If the value of the induced voltage lies between the limits set by peak detectors 30, 31 logic circuit 32 is operated to energize relay 34 controlling a deflector in the path of the coin.
