Abstract

1,154,183. Yeast. TOYO KOATSU INDISTRIES Inc. Sept:13; 1966, No. 40800/66. Heading C6F. Trichosporon japonicum (ATCC Nos. 20002, 20003 and 20004) is cultivated in a nutrient medium in the presence of a petroleum hydrocarbon and a gas containing free oxygen (air). The yeast produced by the cultivation is separated; washed and dried. Cultivation is typically, carried out at a temperature in the range 30‹-40‹C. and at a pH of 5. Petroleum hydrocarbons (0À5-20 volume % of the nutrient medium): normal paraffinic hydrocarbons containing 10 to 22 carbon atoms (aromatic and naphthenic hydrocarbons may be present) exemplified by gasoline, kerosene, gas oil and heavy oil fractions. Nutrient medium : the following constituents are mentioned in addition to agar: (i) yeast extract, corn steep liquor, rice bran extract, molasses and vitamins of group B; (ii) ammonia, ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride, diammomum hydrogen phosphate and urea; (iii) sodium or potassium dihydrogen hosphate and disodium hydrogen phosphate; and (iv) magnesium or ferrous sulphate, and sodium or potassium chloride. An anti-foaming agent may be included. Comparative experiments disclose the cultivation of Candida rugosa and Candida tropicalis.
