Abstract

1,153,950. Sintering iron ore. CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES. 31 July, 1967 [7 Sept., 1966], No. 35091/67. Heading C1A. The sintering of iron ore is controlled by continuously monitoring the magnetic permeability. In the event of any change "the degree of oxidation" is determined and if the said proparties lie outside a predetermined zone, the moisture content of the mixture, the amount of return fines or the fuel content are adjusted to bring the conditions back within the said zone. The zone is defined by testing samples having the maximum and minimum acceptable values of cohesion and reducibility to determine the corresponding values of magnetic permeability and degree of oxidation. The magnetic permeability may be measured by placing a sample in the core of a solenoid which forms part of a resonant circuit and measuring the resonant frequency, whilst the degree of oxidation may be simply determined by observing the "gain in blast" or increase in weight on heating in a muffle furnace of a finely crushed sample. In the diagram the rectangle 1234 defines a working zone bounded by the limiting values of gain in blast (g s g i ) and frequency (f s fi) determined experimentally to correspond to acceptable properties of cohesion and reducibility in the product.
