Abstract

1,153,826. Pressure-sensitive adhesive coating. MONSANTO CO. 20 March, 1967 [21 March, 1966], No. 12869/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Pressure-sensitive adhesive articles comprise a backing member coated with an organic liquid system comprising an organic solvent medium, an organic peroxide and an interpolymer prepared from a mixture (100 weight % total) of (a) 20-80% of an ester of acrylic acid containing 7-20 carbon atoms, (b) 10-60% of an alkanoic acid vinyl ester containing 3-10 carbon atoms, methyl or ethyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylonitrile or vinyl chloride and (c) 1-20% of a C 2 -C 4 -hydroxyalkyl ester of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric or maleic acid, the organic peroxide being present in an amount of at least 0.1% by weight based on the weight of the interpolymer, and the coating being cured by heating, e.g. at 50‹-250‹C for up to 30 minutes. The backing member may be a tape, film, foam or sheet of a synthetic resin, such as plasticised polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose acetate, nylon, polyethylene or polypropylene. The specified organic liquid system can also be applied to paper, metal or painted surfaces.
