Abstract

[Also in Division B5] An extrusion granulator comprises a rotating and reciprocating shaft 6 which carries mixing vanes 20 within a chamber 17, a plug 28a which controls the mixing in this chamber, a forwarding screw 28 and a nose plug (33, Fig. 2, not shown), having peripheral grooves 37. Material forwarded along these grooves is extruded as strands in the forward position of plug 33 (see phantom line, Fig. 2), and the strands are severed as the plug moves rearwardly by cooperation between edge (38) on the plug and a circular knife edge (41a) on a plate (41). The barrel 15 is provided with ribs 19 and chambers 23 for heat exchange medium and a forward housing 25 is provided with further chambers 29 and a vent 30. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), helical grooves (37a) in nose plug (33a) extend over the axial length of the plug and plate 41 is replaced by a ring (60) having radial extensions (63) provided with knife edges (64). In both embodiments, shaft 6 is reciprocated by cooperation between cams (8, 9) Fig. 6 (not shown), and followers (11, 13). An extrusion material specifically mentioned is PVC and the granulate may be fed while still in a plasticized condition to calender rolls.
