A fraction collector consists of a movable circular holder turntable 8 for an array of test tubes 10 held in a continuous spiral array of holes 9, a head 17 arranged to be connected to the bottom of a resin fractionating column which head contains a drop forming nozzle 20 and is mounted on a pair of fixed guide rods 14 so that it can slide in a radial direction over the turntable, the head 17 being connected to a follower leg 21 which follows a spiral groove in the turntable 8 so that as the turntable is successively indexed through a number of revolutions, the head 17 moves in a radial direction and will be continually positioned above successive containers in the spiral array, and a control system that controls the automatic indexing of the turntable 8 so that the next test tube 10 is positioned beneath the head 17 to receive a number of drops either after a predetermined number of drops have been counted into a container, for example by a light source 33 and photo electric transistor 34 in the head 17 or after a predetermined time interval. Radially adjustable limit switches '66 are actuatable by radially adjustable stops 65 to stop motor 23 and hence the movement of head 17 when the nozzle 20 has reached a certain container, and also stops discharge of fluid through nozzle 20. The control system may be provided with a digital counter 38 on which the selected time interval can be set, the digital counter incorporating reed switches.
