A fraction collector capable of collecting differently sized fractions comprises collection means adapted to support a plurality of receivers 4, a motor 7 to advance the collection means so that each receiver in turn receives liquid from liquid dispensing means, for example ion-exchange column 1, means for example drop detector 3 or a source of clock pulses to supply a signal to a programmer when a predetermined amount of liquid has passed from the liquid dispensing means, and means associated with the programmer to activate motor 7 to advance the collection means whenever the programmer has received the number of signals corresponding to the programmed amount of liquid to be collected in that receiver. The drop detector (Fig. 2 not shown) comprises electric light bulb 9, lens system 10 and photo-transistor 11. As the drop falls from the end of tube 2 there is a change in the current passed by photo-transistor 11, and this activates a relay to emit a pulse from the drop detector.
