Abstract

1,153,032. Settling tanks. YORKSHIRE DYEWARE & CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 20 Sept., 1966 [7 July, 1965], No. 28723/65. Heading B1D. [Also in Division C1] Solid particulate materials are separated from a mixture thereof with a liquid carrier, effluent from coal, sand and gravel washeries, by passing the mixture and a flocculant to an inverted frusto-conical zone 10 allowing the mixture to settle into an upper clear layer and a lower layer of coagulum, which coheres into a single mass containing occluded liquid, slowly stirring the mass by means of rotating blades 26 disposed in the lower part of the zone to remove the occluded liquid but not to break up the flocks, and removing the solids from the base through valve outlet 20 and the clean liquid from an overflow 40. The flocculant, which can be mixed with the mixture either externally of the zone or within it, can be a polyacrylamide, or a copolymer of acrylamide with acrylic or methacrylic acid. Between 0.2 and 1.01b.of flocculant per ton of mixture is added. A pressure sensing device may be provided which opens the outlet valve 20 when the flocculated material has reached a certain level.
