Abstract

1,152,998. Cooling extruded tubing. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 24 Aug., 1966 [25 Aug., 1965], No. 37904/66. Heading B5A. A cooling plug for cooling newly extruded plastics tubing, e.g. foamed or otherwise polyethylene or polystyrene tubing, comprises a first chamber 12 defined by tubular walls 13, 14 and end plates 15, 20, 21, and a second chamber 35 having a side wall 36, one end plate 21 in common with the first chamber and a further end plate 37. First chamber 12 is supplied with cooling fluid which is introduced via bores 31 in a conduit 25 and which egresses through bores 32. Chamber 35 communicates with volume V 1 of tube T via bores 38, and conduit 40 provides a fluid exit line via a valve V. In operation, tube T is inflated adjacent extruder 46 by passage of gas through bores 55, 57 and condensed gas or water vapour which would tend to accumulate in volume V 1 is withdrawn via chamber 35. The outer surface of tubular wall 14 may be coated with PTFE to reduce friction, bores 32 may be connected to a reservoir (not shown) and tube T is cut by a knife C.
