Abstract
1,152,918. Torque converters. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. 5 Aug., 1966 [6 Aug., 1965], No. 35251/66. Heading F2C In a hydrodynamic torque converter having an impeller 14, turbine 15 and a reactor 16, the outer wall 34 of the turbine 15 has a crosssection formed by the arcs FG, GH of two circles of radii R 1 and R 2 , respectively, where R 2 is between three and four times R 1 and the outer wall 31 of the impeller has a cross-section formed by the arcs IJ, JK, KL of three circles of radii R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , respectively, where R 4 is between three and four times R 3 and R 5 is between 1À1 to 1À3 times R 3 . The inner shroud 35 of the turbine has a cross-section formed by the arcs F<SP>1</SP>G<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>1</SP>H<SP>11</SP>, H<SP>11</SP>H<SP>1</SP> of three circles of radii R 6 R 7 , R 8 , respectively, where R 7 is between four to six times R 6 and R 8 #R 6 . The inner shroud 32 of the impeller has a cross-section formed by the arcs I<SP>1</SP>J<SP>1</SP>, J<SP>1</SP>K<SP>1</SP>, K<SP>1</SP>L<SP>1</SP> of three circles of radii R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , respectively, where R 9 #R 6 R 10 is between four and six times R 9 and R 11 #R 9 . A straight extension 138 of the turbine inner shroud is adjacent the inner edges of the reactor blades and the outer wall 37 of the reactor is formed of two arcs MN, NS of substantially equal radii R 12 , R 13 . This produces a torque converter having a working chamber of axial length L between 75 and 90% of the radial height H. As shown, the arc FG subtends an angle of less than 90 degrees at the centre and it is preferable that R 2 =3À6 R 1 ; R 4 =3À4 R 3 ; R 5 =1À2 R 3 ; R 7 =4À2 R 6 and R 8 =67% of R 6 so that L= 77% H. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the arc FG subtends an angle of more than 90 degrees at the centre and R 2 #R 4 #3À5 R 1 and R 7# R 10# 5À1 R 6 so that L=86% H. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the turbine (15) is connected to a driven shaft (22) by a friction clutch (19 ... 21) which is engaged when the pressure in the casing (11) exceeds the pressure in the clutch chamber (24). The axial length (L 1 ) of the complete unit is between 35% and 50% of its diameter (H 1 ) and for the torque converter of Fig. 2 is approximately 40% of the diameter whilst for the torque converter of Fig. 3 is approximately 45% of its diameter. Cooling fins (50) are provided on the impeller.
