In a process for the polymerization of ethylene at high pressure in a reaction vessel, the reaction product and unreacted material are drawn off by means of a valve at the outlet of the vessel, the valve being opened and closed at times such that the interval of time between one closing of the valve and the following opening is controlled by the integral of the pressure prevailing in the vessel, or the duration of the opening of the valve is controlled in response to a function of the pressure prevailing in the vessel at the instant which immediately precedes the opening of the valve. The control apparatus may comprise an electrical or electronic control system, such as that described in Specification 1,152,792.
