Abstract
1,152,621. Cooling, generators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 Jan., 1967 [30 June, 1966], No. 29474/66. Heading H2A. In an electrical e.g. central power station generator comprising a rotor 1 carrying D.C. field windings and a stator 7 carrying liquidcooled conductors 23 in which voltages are induced by the rotating magnetic field, a stationary electrically insulating gas impervious cylinder 21 is disposed in the annular space between rotor and stator and contains the rotor and a hydrogen coolant, and the stator includes laminations extending normally to the rotor axis and divided' axially into packets defining radial ventilation ducts 13, each blanked off at 13A, 13B along its radially outer end into segments. which alternate with those which are not blanked off; those which are blanked off in one duct 13 are adjacent those which are not in neighbouring ducts, and axially successive ducts are interconnected by axial cooling ducts 17 through the laminations and are connected alternately to a cooling air outlet 19 and a cooling air inlet formed by a plurality of plenum chambers 15 extending along and spaced around the stator. The cylinder 21 may be of polyester or epoxy impregnated wound glass fibre, Cu eddy current damper end plates 37 having liquid cooled pipes 39 are provided at the stator lamination stack ends, and equal distribution of the cooling air is ensured by baffles 31 and by reducing towards the mid-axial plane the transverse cross-sections of the chambers 15.
