Abstract
1,152,572. Axial-flow fans; cooling engine cylinders. DYNAIR Ltd. July 13, 1966 [July 15, 1965; Nov.18, 1965], Nos.30069/65 and 49124/65. Headings F1B and F1C. [Also in Division F2] A pneumatically or vacuum operated friction clutch in the drive of a fan of an engine cooling system is controlled by a thermally responsive device. As shown, a compressed air operated clutch has an axially movable output member 26 connected by a universal joint comprising rubber rings 34-36 to a fan disc 25. Clutch engagement is assisted by the axial reaction thrust of the fan. The clutch member 26 carries an internally cored split friction ring 40 which is engagable with an externally cored lip 52 of an axially fixed driving clutch part 50. Clutch parts 26, 50 are formed with axial extensions 27, 53 forming respectively an axially movable cylinder and a stationary hollow ram, the cylinder 27 being rotatably mounted on the ram 53 by roller bearings 54, 55. A release spring 57 acts through a pin 59 and bearing 55 to bias the clutch member 26 to its disengaged position, the clutch being engaged by compressed air admitted to the interior of the ram 53 under the control of a valve which is controlled in accordance with the air temperature, or coolant temperature or engine block temperature. The air pressure acts on an end wall 68 of the cylinder, and is also admitted, through ports 75 to a chamber 76 to urge a sealing member 78 into sealing engagement with the clutch member 26. Air is admitted to the ram by way of a line 19 and a spigot 65 which is supported in an extension 67 of the cylinder end wall 68 by an oil impregnated bushing 66. Details of a vacuum-operated clutch are shown in Fig. 3 (not shown).
