Abstract

1,152,392. Radio-diagnostic apparatus. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM) and UNIVERSITA DEGLI STUDI DI PISA. Aug.5, 1966 [Aug.17, 1965], No.35236/66. Heading G1A. Radio-diagnostic apparatus for scanning the body of a patient to determine body radio-activity at points or zones, or the activity of the whole body, includes a number of pairs of scintillation counters, each pair mounted on a respective carriage which is movable longitudinally and transversely with respect to the bed on which the patient is lying. Each carriage 7, 8, 9, Fig.2, supports two detectors, one above and one below the level of the bed 4. The collimators for each pair of detectors are axially aligned and the pairs of collimators aligned transverse to the bed 4. The carriages can move longitudinally with respect to the bed on respective levels of a pair of three-level rails and transversely on individual guides. A motor 6 with a screw drive is provided for simultaneous movement of all three carriages 7, 8, 9 longitudinally. Respective motors are provided for the transverse and longitudinal movement of an individual carriage. Thus various measurement procedures are possible. For example, the carriages may be fixed at predetermined positions and simultaneous measurements taken at these three different points on the body. The output of each detector pair is fed to multi-channel recorder via an analyzer and digital integrator, Fig. 6 (not shown). By moving the carriages simultaneously according to a predetermined programme, a scan over the whole bed plane can be carried out Fig. 7 (not shown). In this case, a summator may be used to integrate the detector outputs and obtain a measurement of body activity, Fig. 8 (not shown). By connecting the top detectors separately from the bottom ones, the activity relationship between the top and bottom of the body may be determined. An individual carriage moving by itself may be used to scan a predetermined zone of the body, Fig. 9 (not shown) A photo-electric system may be incorporated to measure the body layer thickness examined so as to relate the activity with this thickness.
