Abstract
1,152,192. Titanium trichloride. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 20 July, 1966 [23 July, 1965], No. 32530/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C3] Titanium trichloride is prepared by reducing titanium tetrachloride using one or more aluminium or magnesium alkyls or alkyl chlorides in a reaction medium comprising one or more dialkyl, dicycloalkyl, diaryl and/or alkyl-aryl ethers and in the presence of a dry inert atmosphere. The reduction may be effected at 20- 200‹ C. Preferred ethers are diethyl ether, dibutyl ether, diisoamyl ether, anisole, and phenyl isopropyl ether. In the relevant Examples (3 and 4) the reducing agents used are Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 and Al 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Cl 3 . The TiCl 3 product is in the violet form (more particularly the gamma form, it would appear), and is active as a catalyst in the polymerization of alphaolefins. In comparative Examples (1, 2) the reduction of TiCl 4 to TiCl 3 is effected using Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 with toluene as reaction medium (Example 1), or using Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl with a mixture of decane, undecane and dodecane as reaction medium (Example 2). The product is violet in each case.
