Abstract
1,152,139. Bearings. BROWN BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 21 Dec., 1967 [23 Dec., 1966], No. 58043/67. Heading F2A. In a hydrostatic axial bearing arrangement for a shaft 1, a piston 9 and a cylinder 7 are positioned at an end 2 of the shaft and a piston 10 and a cylinder 8 are positioned at the end 3 of the shaft. Each piston is separated from the end of a shaft by means of a gap which is supplied with pressurized-fluid, and is urged towards the respective shaft-end by pressurizedfluid which is supplied to its cylinder; the amount being supplied is controlled by valve means which is operable in response to axial movement of the shaft. Thus the pressure of fluid in each cylinder is varied in order to oppose the respective axial movement of the shaft. In an embodiment the shaft 1 is provided with a groove 17 which guides a disc 19. The latter is mounted on a rotatable and axially displaceable shaft 21 which also carries valve members 23, 24 thereon. In use fluid is pumped to the valve means from a tank 29, via a pump 27 and pipes 25, a pressure-holding valve 31 being connected to the pipes 25. If the shaft is displaced to the left, for example, the member 23 allows pressurized-fluid to flow into a pressure-space 12 of the cylinder 7, via a pressure-space 33 of the control valve and a pipe 15. At the same time the member 24 allows pressurized-fluid to flow from the pressure space 13 of the cylinder 8 and into the tank 29, via a pipe 16, a pressurespace 34 of the control valve and a return-flow pipe 36. The pistons 9 and 10 are each provided with a bore 14 and with a sealing portion 11. The pressurized-fluid in the gap between each portion 11 and the respective end of the shaft acts as a connection so that the pistons are rotated by the shaft. In modifications each piston is supplied with lubrication grooves and with a throttle bore therethrough; each piston is spring-urged towards the shaft and has a concave surface which forms a gap with the respective shaft end; and each piston has a hydrodynamic axial bearing mounted therein, a resilient ring being provided between the piston and the bearing.
