Abstract
1,152,036. Coated products. DUNLOP SEMTEX Ltd. 9 Sept., 1966 [24 Sept., 1965], No. 40704/65. Heading B2E. [Also in Division B5] A method of producing patterned thermoplastic sheet material includes the steps of adhering a thermoplastic layer having a printed pattern on one surface to a carrier sheet by means of a clear adhesive, the printed surface of the thermoplastic layer being in contact with the adhesive, and either the thermoplastic layer itself, or a further thermoplastic layer applied to the non-printed surface thereof, containing a blowing agent, the further thermoplastic layer being applied as a plastisol containing a blowing agent, heating the assembly sufficiently to decompose the blowing agent and stripping from the carrier sheet the patterned thermoplastic sheet material having a clear surface layer derived from the adhesive. Preferably the thermoplastic layer and/or the further thermoplastic layer is of vinyl chloride resin e.g. polyvinyl chloride. When the cellular underlayer, formed by the layer containing the blowing agent, is the lowermost layer, the product stripped from the carrier sheet may be attached to a backing material such as a flooring felt saturated with a bitumen or resin and coated with an acrylic emulsion, or a thermoplastic backing material based on a polyvinyl chloride binder. The carrier sheet is preferably an endless steel belt and the clear adhesive is preferably a polyvinyl chloride plastisol. The plastisol is spread or roller coated on the carrier sheet and may be semi-gelled by application of infra-red heat prior to application of the printed layer. Heat may be applied to the assembly of carrier sheet, adhesive and printed thermoplastic expandible layer in an infra-red or dielectric type oven having two or more different temperature zones. A cooling fluid may be directed against the laminate after heating. The printed cellular sheets obtained may be laminated, before or after stripping of the endless carrier sheet, to a backing material by passing the two layers between the nip of heated rollers, The adhesive composition may contain a plasticizer and stabiliser and the expandible sheet may contain a plasticizer, stabilizer, and pigment as well as a blowing agent. Quantitative examples are given.
