Abstract
1,152,016. Extruder for multi-layer films or sheets. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 8 June, 1967, No. 26573/67. Addition to 1,131,127. Headings B5A and B5B. In an extrusion adapter 10 for preparing multi-layer films or sheets a cylindrical passage 12 is contained in a housing 11. The housing also contains hemi-toroidal plenums 40 and 41, the plenums being separated by dam portions 28 and 38, communicating with polymer sources 45 and 46 respectively, and with the central passage by a passageway 43, and hemi-toroidal plenums 59 and 60 separated by dams 50 and 57 and communicating with polymer sources 63 and 64 and with the central passage by a passageway 61. Two bushings 70 and 75 are located in the central passage and have inlet ends of circular cross-section and outlet ends of elongate cross-section, the bushings being oriented in such a way that their elongated slots are parallel to the slot of the sheeting die. The bushings are disposed such that their discharge ends are situated between the plenum passageways and the discharge end of the central passage. In operation the discharge end 13 of the central passage communicates with a sheeting die (not shown) and a first polymer is supplied to the inlet end 14 of the passage 12. The bushing 75 forms this material into an elongate configuration at its discharge end 77 where second and third polymers from hemi-toroidal plenums 59 and 60 enter through passageway 61 and encapsulate the first material. The composite stream issuing from the second bushing 70 is then encapsulated with polymers from hemitoroidal plenums 40 and 41 entering by passageway 43. The five layer composite film then passes to the sheeting die from where it is extruded.
