Abstract
1,151,947. Thermo-electric cascades. TESLA NARODNI PODNIK. 13 July, 1967 [2 Aug., 1966], No. 32326/67. Heading H1K. A thermo-electric Peltier effect cascade consists of a hot stage H separated by an electrically insulating but thermally conducting layer I from a cold stage C. The two stages are electrically interconnected in series or series-parallel and the relative dimensions and/or manner of interconnection of the thermo-electric elements in the two stages is such that, when both stages are energized from a common voltage source, the current in the cold stage is of a lower "relative intensity" than that in the hot stage. "Relative intensity" is defined as the ratio of the current actually flowing in a stage to the current which would produce maximum cooling effect in that stage. It is stated that conformity to this condition can produce a cascade having a higher overall temperature difference than would be the case if the same thermo-electric elements were connected in a maximum-efficiency cascade. Fig. 3 shows a series-parallel connection between the stages H and C, in which the number of thermo-electric elements is the same in both stages but in which the cold stage has a lower current. A similar arrangement, but with up to five times as many elements in the cold stage as in the hot, is also described. Fig. 2 (not shown), depicts an arrangement in which stages H and C are connected electrically in series but with the cold stage elements having a lower length to cross-sectional area ratio than the hot stage elements.
