Abstract

1,151,807. Colour television. BRITISH BROADCASTING CORP. 29 Feb., 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 19290/67. Heading H4F. To generate a colour television signal from a monochrome television signal, the received monochrome signal is split between at least two channels (e.g. I - V, Fig. 1) of which one (channel I) passes the whole signal as a luminance signal to a colour coder 10, and of which the or each other channel includes an amplitude selective system (e.g. clippers 14, 22, 30, inverters 16, 24, 32, AND gates 26, 34 and blanking stage 18) arranged to pass only those portions of the signal lying within a predetermined amplitude range to means arranged to respond thereto to provide a pre-set chrominance input to the coder, e.g. sets of faders 20, 28, 36 and 38, each set pre-set to give any desired relative values to the signals R, G and B. It is arranged that within each predetermined amplitude range, amplitude variations do not affect the pre-set chrominance input to the coder. The luminance channel (channel I) includes a delay 12 to compensate for the delays introduced by the components in the other channels. An incoming monochrome signal is shown in Fig. 2 (a) with blanking periods 6, the thresholds of clippers 14, 22 and 30 being indicated at 14a, 22a and 30a. The waveforms in Fig. 2 (b) are each labelled with the reference of the block of Fig. 1 which provided the waveform at its output.
