A press for baling paper pulp comprises at least one receptacle 29, means for controlling the delivery of material to the receptacle, a piston 111 for tamping the material in the receptacle, and a piston 83 for compressing the material to form a bale. As shown, the press comprises four square-section receptacles 29, 30, 31, (32) mounted on a turn-table 28 for rotation about a stationary shaft 95 by means of a motor (75), reduction gearing (76) and a gear 101. Material is delivered to the receptacles in turn by a loading shoot 40 having two inlets 43, 44. Doors 108, 109 for the inlets 43, 44 are operated by hydraulic cylinders 48, 52. During filling and tamping the base 113<SP>1</SP> of the receptacle is supported by an hydraulic piston 39. The receptacles 29 . . (32) have reinforcing ribs 80, 81, 85 . . . 90, 92 . . . 94. Indexing means for the turn-table 28 comprises a stop plate 105 engageable in notches, as 107, in the turn-table, by means of an hydraulic cylinder 106. At the compressing station the hydraulic piston 83 lifts the movable base 113 of the receptacle and compresses the material against a stationary wall 114 secured to an upper beam 25. At the ejecting station the bale is lifted by an hydraulically energized lifter head 72 until level with a plate 33 and then ejected by an hydraulic ejector (73), Fig. 4 (not shown). When the turn-table is brought to rest in each of the four indexed positions it is raised by means of hydraulic cylinders 34, 38, 61, (62), (Fig. 2, not shown) so as to seal the upper openings of the receptacles against the lower surface of the beam 25.
