To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we,'l\IARTIN LAERNoEs, a citizen of the Kingdom'of the Netherlands, and JOHN DUNN, a citizen of the United 5' States, both residing in Streator, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Machines for Compressing Detinned or other I Scraps, of which the following is a specifica- Io tion.
This invention relates to certain improvements in machines for compressing detinned and other scraps, for which we filed an appli cation for Letters Patent on January 10, 1903,
Serial No. 138,511, whereby the construction of the same is considerably simplified and the scraps instead of being compressed in the receiving-boxes into blocks on a special anvil below the box and delivered from the machine by Withdrawing the anvil-block by means of a special cylinder and piston, are compressed on a stationary anvil block in the foundation-plate and then moved with the box over to an opening in the foundationplate and delivered, in connection with a reciprocating plunger, through said opening to a delivery-chute below the foundation'plate simultaneously with the compression action, which takes place in the next following box by the action of the reciprocating compressing-plunger. By this arrangement the time taken up for withdrawing the anvil and delivering the compressed package of scraps from the same is saved, for the reason that 5 the delivering of the package of scraps now takes place at the same time as the compressing action in the next receiving-box takes place; and for this purpose the invention consists of a machine fomcompressing de- 0 tinned and other scraps which-comprises a plurality of receiving-boxes, a foundationplate below the same having an opening, a stationary anvil in said opening, a verticallyreciprocating plunger located vertically above one of said receiving-boxes and .the anvil, means for imparting a step-by-step motion to said receivingboxes, a second opening in said foundation.-. plate at some distance from the anvil and reciprocating 5o plunger and corresponding in size .to the in-- Serial No. 149,682. ner opening of the receiving-boxes, a second reciprocating plunger acting vertically above said second opening, and meansfor delivering the blocks of compressed scraps below the second opening in the foundationplate.
The invention consists, further, of certain additional details of construction,\vhich will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims. 1 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved machine for compressingdetinned and other-scraps. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the receiving-boxes, partly in horizontal section on line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig.
4 is a top view of the receiving-boxes,showing the plunger operating the .same.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the foundation-plate of our improved machine for compressing detinned and other scraps. The foundation-plate is preferably made in the shape of a disk and of sufficient strength to support a number of receiving-boxes B, which are made of rectangular, round, or other cross-section and reinforced at their upper ends by retaining-frames b and-at their lower ends by exterior strengthening-straps bof corresponding shape. Each receivingbox is composed of two parts, provided with perforated ears n, that are connected by means of fastening-bolts n. The receivingboxes B may also be made of one integral piece, so as to do awaywith the fasteningbolts. They are made thicker at their-lower ends, so as to resist the strain to which they are subjected when compressing the scraps. The inner ends of the upper parts of the re-' ceiving-boxes are slightly rounded off or tapered, so as'to facilitate the feeding of the scraps from a platform K, which surrounds the upper ends of the receiving-boxes. . plurality of receiving-boxes'are arranged on the foundation-plate, six being shown in the 5 drawings. The receiving-boxes are arranged in a circle equidistantly from each other and connected at their lower ends by a ringshaped frame B, provided with openings corresponding in shape and size to the re- [00 ceiving-boxes, so as to embracethe same;
On therouter circumference of the frame B1 .are arranged flanges b which are equidis right standards S, so that the ring-shaped frame Bniay be turned onthe rollers around the vertical axis of the rings f" and of the foundation-plate A. .A step-by-step or intermittent rotary motion is imparted t e-the frame B by a hook-shaped lever C, wh ch ispivoted to a collar 0 on the piston-rod Dof the piston of a horizontalsteam-or aircylinder D, that is provided with-suitable inlet and outlet valves, (not shown',) which jare operated at the proper time by theattendant. The hook shaped end ofthe lever G is moved alongthe circumference of the ring-J shaped frame B until it engages one of the bolts b of the same; Then-the piston Dlis operated in the reverse direction and'th e frame B, together with the receiving-boxes B, moved the distance of one-sixth of the circumference of the ring-shaped frame B; By the next outward motion ofthe piston and piston -'rod D of the cylinder D the hookshaped lever O is'pressed against the circumference of the ring-shaped frame B by the spring 0 interposed between the collar. 0' and the hook 0, its beveled end permitting it to pass over the bolts b while'its hookshaped end engages the bolts-on its return stroke.
A second pair of upright standards S'is arranged outside of the foundation-plate A,
the upper ends of the standardsS and S being connected by astrong top plate E, while the lower end is connected by a strong'baseplate E, each platebeing'firmly held in position on the screw-threaded ends of the standards' by suitable screw-nuts d d, respectively above and below the plates. The top plate E serves to support a vertical cylinder F,
Y which is provided with suitable inlet and out-- let valves and a suitable mech'anism for op erating the same; To the lower end of the piston-rod F of the cylinder F is attached a plunger F, the shape of which corresponds to the cross-section of the receiving-boxes, so as to fit snugly into the same. Between the plunger F and the lower end or head of the cylinder F areinterposed anumberof cushioning-springs G, which are interposed be tween a stationary plate 9 and a sliding plate g, which is guided in stationary brackets or I hangers g attached to the lower end of the cylinder F. After the receiving-boxes B are charged with scraps they are placed one after the other over the stationary anvil'M, which fits in an opening ofthe'foundation-plate A and under the plunger F which'is operated so as to produce a series of blows in quick succession forcompressing the scraps in the receiving-box until the scraps are compressed into a square block or package at the lower end. As the scraps are gradually compressed the strokes of the plunger are repeated at greater intervals, the force of the plunger F being taken up at the end of each upstroke by the cushioning-springs G, so as to facilitate the working of theplunger and cylinder and prevent injury to the latter.
In the-foundation-plate A is arranged at a distance of one=sixth of its circumference from the anvil an opening a, that is below the adjacent receiving-box, corresponding in shape to the inner circumference of the rethan the plunger F of the compressing-cyt inder.F. The plunger H serves for the purpose of descending into the receivingloox' B, which has been moved over the opening a in the foundation-plate, so as to 'push the compressedvpackage or block of scraps in the lower end of the box out of the same and through the clearance-opening a of the foundation-plate A onto an inclined chute I below the same, as shown in Fig. 1. As each receiving-box is moved after com- .pression by the hook-shaped lever C over the opening a in the foundation-plate A, the knockout or clearing plunger H is lowered andthe compressed block forced out, while at the same time the compression in the following receiving-box below the. compressionplunger is accomplished. Thus the compression in one box"take s place simultaneously with the delivery of the compressed block from the receiving-box without interrupting the regular intermittent motion of .the machine for the purpose of removing and delivering the compressed block or package, as was necessary in our application hereinbefore referred to. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent I v 1. Aniachine for compressing detinned and other scraps, which consists of a stationary foundation-plate, a plurality of upright re* ceiving-boxessupported on said foundationplate, an anvil, below one of said receivingboxes, a clearance-opening in the foundation-plate below the adjacent receiving-box,

2. A machine for compressing detinn'ed and other scraps, which consists of a stationary foundation-plate provided with an opening,
a stationary anvil in said opening, a plurality of upright receiving-boxes supported on said foundation-plate, a vertically-reciprocating plunger above the stationary anvil in the -foundation-plate for compressing the scraps in the box above the anvil, a clearance-opening in the foundation-plate below the adjacent receiving-box, a chute below the clearance-opening, means for imparting a step-by-V step motion to said receiving-boxes, and a reciprocating plunger above the clearanceopening for delivering the compressed block of scraps at the lower end of the box into the chute, substantially asset forth.
3. A machine for com-pressing detinned and other scraps, which consists of a stationary foundation-plate provided with an opening, a stationary anvil in said opening, a plurality of upright receiving-boxes supported on said foundation-plate, a clearance-openin g, in the foundation plate at the .same distance from the anvil as the boxes are from each other,
above the anvil, means for im'partinga stepby-step rotary motion to said receiving-boxes for bringing the box with the compressed scraps over the clearance-opening, and means for removing thecompressed scraps from the box above the, clearance-opening, substantially as set forth; i

A machine for compressing detinned and other scraps, consisting of a stationary foundation-plate providedwith an opening, a stationary anvil in said opening, a plurality of upright receivingboxes supported on said foundation-plate and provided with reinforcing devices at their lower ends, a ring-shaped frame embracing the lower ends of said receiving-boxes, antifriction-rollers for guiding the inner circumference of said frame, means for intermittently rotating said frame and receiving-boxes, a v ertically-reciprocating and ter the other passing over the stationary anvi], a clearance-opening .in the foundationplate below the adjacent receiving-box, and a reciprocating plunger above the clearanceopening for removing the compressed scraps at the lower end of the box, substantially asset forth. The combination, with two pairs of upright supporting-pillars provided with a transverse top plate and a bottom plate, of a foundation-plate provided with an opening, asta tionary anvil in said opening, a plurality of receiving-boxes open at both ends supportedon said foundation-plate, a ring-shaped frame connecting the lower ends of said receivingboxes, means for guiding said frame, means for imparting intermittent motion to said frame andreceiving-boxes, a vertically-reciprocating spring-cushioned plungerlocated in line withthe anvil in the opening of the foundation-plate and the receiving-box then 'in position over the anvil, a clearance-opening in the foundation-plate below the adjacent receiving-box, and a reciprocating plunger above'the clearance-opening for removing the compressed scraps at the lower end of the box, substantially as set forth.
6. A machine for compressing detinned and other scraps, which consists of a stationary foundation-plate provided with an opening, an anvil in said opening, a plurality of upright receiving-boxes open at both ends sup- 8 ported on the foundation-plate, a platform at the upper ends-of said receiving-boxes for charging the same with scraps, a frame em-' bracing the lower ends of said receivingboxes, means for imparting an intermittent motion to said frame and receiving-boxes, a vertically-reciprocatin g and spring-cushioned plunger vertically above one of the receiving-boxes for compressing the scraps in the same, a reciprocating clearing-plunger ar- 5 ranged sidewis'e of the compressing-plunger and at the same distance from the latter as the receiving-boxes are located from each other, a clearance-opening in the foundationplate vertically below the olearing-plunger, we and means for actuating the compressing and clearing plungers, substantially as set forth.
