Abstract

1,151,240. Measuring combustible gas concentrations, electrically. R. HœBNER. Dec.3, 1966, No.54208/66. Heading G1N. In a portable methane gas detector for mines there are two heated catalytic resistor filaments R 1 , R 2 Fig.1 and two heated non-catalytic reference filaments R 3 , R 4 , mounted in a chamber into which a gas sample is drawn through a duct 11 by a pump 17. The resistors form the arms of a bridge connected to a stabilized D.C. source through circuitry which ensures that the bridge is not energized until the pump finishes pumping. With methane concentrations up to 5% the catalytic combustion effects predominate to produce an indication on the bridge meter 21 in sector 21a Fig.2. With higher concentrations there may be insufficient oxygen to sustain combustion and the resistance of the filaments is determined by the thermal conductivity of the gas, which produces a greater heat loss from the higher temperature filaments R 1 , R 2 than from the lower temperature reference filaments R 3 , R 4 . In consequence the bridge is unbalanced in the opposite direction and the meter is calibrated to indicate accordingly in sector 21d.
