Abstract
115,122. Ghinelli, L. May 25, 1917. Air casings, non-structural; trimming.- Relates to ships of the kind in which the spaces between the double hull at the sides and double bottom, underneath the decks, and in other places are packed with watertight sheet-metal cells, independent of one another and of the structure of the vessels in order to render such ships unsinkable. In the present invention, the cells are held in their places by wooden framework, the buoyancy of which would compensate for the weight of the metal of the cells. Within the double bottom of the vessel two passages or galleries, one on each side of the centre and extending to the sides, are provided which are in communication so that, in case of flooding, the water is distributed. without causing the ship to list. Longitudinal bulkheads divide the ship into compartments which are fitted with water-tight doors and vented by tubes extending above deck.
