Abstract

5877. Bocquet, B., and Vicherat, A. March 29. Boat hulls; buoyancy, increasing; capsizing, preventing ; stability, increasing; water, relieving from.-The hull is preferably of metal, and is subdivided, below the deck 3, by transverse partitions forming a number of airtight compartments which may be filled with some light material such as cork. The end compartments extend up to the gunwale, and have rounded tops or decks which assist in righting the boat should it be capsized. Instead of subdividing the boat by means of transverse bulkheads, the span below the deck may be filled with closely-fitting metal boxes. Two compartments contain fresh water, and are fitted with tubes 4 closed by seven stoppers. A compartment 5 amidships, closed by an airtight cover 6, contains provisions. Along both sides, above the deck, are placed cases containing cork or some other light material. Valves 10, of the form shown in Fig. 6, automatically free the deck from water. within the tube 11 passing from the deck to the skin of the boat is secured a seating 12. The valve 13 is held against this seating by a float 17 when the boat is afloat. Should water accumulate on the deck, the valve opens and allows it to escape. Fig. 5 shows a method of rendering a boat of ordinary construction self-righting. Cork or other casings or airtight compartments 8 are placed along one side, and an equivalent weight 9 on the other, so that, should the boat be capsized, it immediately rights itself.
