In an activated sludge process taking place in a tank divided into an aeration zone and a settling zone by a double-walled dividing member 50/52, the transfer of aerated liquid to the settling zone and the return of sludge to the aeration zone is controlled by a variable baffle 54 (Fig. 6 and 7, not shown).
