Abstract

1,151,168. Stabilised penicillin compositions. AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS CORP. 5 Oct., 1967 [16 Dec., 1966], No. 45470/67. Heading A5B. A stabilized therapeutic composition for parenteral administration comprises crystals having a particle size of 5-150 microns of benzathine penicillin G (N,N'-dibenzylethylenediamine dipenicillin) in an aqueous suspending medium which includes a wetting agent for the crystals, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, the polyvinylpyrrolidone being present in an amount equal for at least ten times the weight of the sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and the sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate being present as 0.05 to 0.5% on a weight to volume basis of the total composition. The benzathine penicillin G crystals may be coated with a coating composition comprising a wetting agent, e.g. a mixture of polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate and stearyl alcohol. The compositions may also contain additional suspending agents, emulsifiers, surface active agents, anti-foaming agents, buffers and/or preservatives. -
