Abstract

1,150,976. Local viewing apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966], No. 53821/67. Heading H4F. An infra-red telescope comprises an oscillating spherically concave mirror 2, Fig. 2, which with an infra-red detector 4a analyses the infra-red radiation passing through window 1 from the object. Detector 4a controls via an amplifier (not shown) the current supplied to an electro-luminescent diode 5 which emits visible light with an intensity proportional to the temperature of the point of the object. This visible light from source 5 illuminates through an aperture 6 a small flat mirror 7 arranged symmetrically with respect to detector 4a and aperture 6, so that the beam 16 reflected by mirror 7 is reflected by spherical mirror 2 to form a parallel beam 17 in the instantaneous direction of the incoming infra-red radiation received by element 4a. Beam 17 is reflected by mirrors 8 and 9 into a telescope 15 having an objective 10 so that the converted infra-red image of the object is seen in the eyepiece 12 in accurate superposition with the direct image formed by the telescope from the visible light coming from the object directly through objective 10. Telescope 15 may include an image intensifying tube. Mirror 2 is arranged to scan a raster by means of an electric motor and cams, Fig. 3 (not shown). The amplifier supplying the signals to the diode 5 may control the brightness and contrast of the converted infra-red image.
