Abstract
1,150,774. Trioxan-diglycidyl ether terpolymers. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 4 July, 1966 [3 July, 1965], No. 29960/66. Headings C3B and C3P. Copolymers comprising 88À0 to 97À9% by weight of trioxan, 2 to 10% by weight of a cyclic ether or cyclic formal, and 0À1 to 3% by weight of a polyglycol diglycidyl ether of formula where a is an integer of 2 to 5, are prepared by polymerizing at - 50‹ C. to + 100‹ C. using a cationic catalyst. Specified diglycidyl ethers are those of diglycol and triglycol. Specified cyclic ethers and cyclic formals are ethylene and propylene oxide, epichlorohydrin, 4-chloromethyldioxolan, and glycol- and diglycol-formals. Specified catalysts are organic and inorganic acids and acyl halides, BF 3 , BF 3 .etherate, and diazonium fluoroborates. Heat, oxidation and light stabilizers may be incorporated into the copolymers. In the examples, (1) trioxan, ethylene oxide and diglycol diglycidyl ether are bulk copolymerized in the presence of BF3.dibutyletherate, and hydrolysed with aqueous NH 3 , and (2) trioxan, ethylene oxide and triglycol diglycidyl ether are bulk copolymerized in the presence of p-nitrophenyl diazonium fluorborate, and hydrolysed with benzylalcohol/triethanolamine.
