Abstract

1,150,740. Fibrillated films and tapes. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 23 Aug., 1966 [8 Sept., 1965], No. 38445/65. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1 A film or tape of a plastics material is oriented, and then fibrillated by passing it through an agitated fluidized and preferably heated bed of particulate material. The film or tape may be passed through the bed in a slack condition or may be stretched during their passage. Specified polymers are polyacrylonitrile, P.V.C., polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyureas and polyesters, and copolymers thereof. The particulate bed may be of air-agitated particulate sand, glass, aluminium or shot-blasting material. Suitably one, or two tapes of organic polymer are twisted together and subjected to the above treatment to produce a cord (see Division D1).
