[Also in Division D1] Continuous filament synthetic polymer yarns having properties such as thickness or dyeaffinity which vary along the length of the yarn are produced by applying a yarn plasticizer to the continuous undrawn yarns in an amount varying along the length of the yarn in a programmed manner according to a pseudorandom pattern and subsequently drawing the yarn. The plasticizer may be applied non- uniformly before or after uniform application of a yarn finish, and may be in admixture with other materials such as dye modifying agents and/or plasticizer fixing agents. Nylon and polyethylene terephthalate are specified as yarn materials. Water and glycerol are mentioned as suitable plasticizers.
