Abstract

1,150,616. Acoustic well logging. MOBIL OIL CORP. 11 Jan., 1967 [6 Sept., 1966], No. 20703/68. Divided out of 1,150,615. Addition to 1,150,615. Heading H4D. An attachment for filling the space between a borehole logging sonde and the borehole wall in the energy radiating and/or receiving area of the sonde provides a transmitting medium of known characteristics and is releasably attached by, for example, mechanically weak links to the sonde to permit the sonde to be moved upwardly if the attachment becomes lodged in the hole but the sonde is supported within the attachment in such a manner as to prevent its detachment whilst the whole is being lowered into the borehole. The sonde may radiate acoustic energy at a frequency of, for example, 1 megacycle, and the attachment may comprise an oil-filled chamber 50 formed by two rigid brass members 19, 20 and a resilient rubber member 24. The members 19, 20 are attached to the sonde by easily shearable pins 25, 26, and a collar 30 attached to the sonde sits on a shoulder 31 in the lower member 20. The rubber member 24 is wired across the two members in a recess formed by end extensions to protect it from mechanical damage during movement.
