Abstract
1,150,426. Polymerisation catalyst. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 6 June, 1966 [7 June, 1965], No. 25040/66.' Heading B1E [Also in Division C3] A catalyst composition comprising the product which forms on mixing (a) an organoaluminium compound of the formula R" n AlX m where R" represents a saturated aliphatic, saturated cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, each containing up to 20 carbon atoms, or a combination of such radicals, X is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine, n is an integer or 1-3 inclusive, m is 0 or 1 or 2, and n + m equals 3, (b) a salt of a betadiketone being a salt of the formula Me (- O - C (R"') = CH - CO - R'") y where Me is a metal from Group IIA, IIIA, IVA, IB, IIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB, or VIII of the Periodic Table, each R" represents a saturated aliphatic, saturated cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical containing up to 10 carbon atoms, and y equals the valence of the metal Me, and (c) water, the mole ratio of component (c) to component (a) being in the range 0.02:1 to 1.6:1. The metal Me may be Ca, Sr, Ba, Cu, Be, Mg, Zn, Cd, Hg, B, Al, Ga, In, Tl, Ge, Sn, Pb, Ag, V, Or, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zr and Ti. Specific examples of component (a) is tri isobutylaluminium and of component (b) is the acetylacetonate salt of Zn, Cu, Zr, V, Mn, Fe or Co. Other examples are given.
