A drive unit 13 situated above the pile cap 10 of a reactor is selectively connectible by means of clutches either to shafts 14 driving control rod winding mechanisms 11 or to shafts 14 driving control rod winding mechanisms 12. The mechanisms 11 serve for normal reactor control whereas mechanisms 12 serve for emergency shut down and are required to operate faster. The two different speeds are obtained by employing in the unit 13 either a two-speed motor or a two-speed gear-box.
