Abstract

Fluorinated polymers are prepared by (i) contacting (a) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing fluorine or (b) mixtures of such monomers and one or more copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers with a catalyst comprising titanium tetrachloride, triethyl aluminium and tetrahydrofuran, in the absence of solvents, at 25‹ to 60‹ C., under autogenous pressure, wherein the titanium tetrachloride is used in an amount to provide at least 1 p.p.m. (based on the weight of the monomer) of titanium, triethyl aluminium is used in amounts of 1-10 moles per mole of the tetrachloride and tetrahydrofuran in amounts of 1-20 moles per mole of the tetrachloride, the catalyst mixture being prepared by mixing triethyl aluminium with tetrahydrofuran and subsequently adding titanium tetrachloride and (ii) recovering the polymer. The fluorine containing monomer may be tri- or tetrafluoroethylene, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride or chlorotrifluoroethylene. In the examples, vinyl fluoride, chlorotrifluoroethylene, vinyl fluoride and chlorotrifluoroethylene, and vinylidene fluoride are polymerized using the above catalyst mixture, the product being recovered by treatment of the reaction mixture with methanol and acid.
