Abstract

[Also in Division G1] A temperature responsive actuator for a valve 45 comprises a casing 10 containing a chamber 11 filled with thermally expansible wax adapted to be heated by a heating element 12 through which a constant electrical current is passed, the wax moving a piston shaft 16, 22 to actuate the valve, the casing 10 being surrounded by a housing 30 to provide an annular space 34 through which a cooling fluid is passed, this fluid ensuring that overheating of the actuator does not occur. In the arrangement shown, the cooling fluid is the same as the fluid controlled by the valve 45, the effect of the fluid flow from the valve inlet 39 to the outlet 41 causing a suction effect in a passageway 36 thus drawing a by-pass cooling flow through the space 34. The valve 45 is provided with a seat 44 and a spring 46 urges the valve towards its closed position. The shaft of the actuator acts through a bearing 50 to open the valve, its movement being guided by a stem 51 sliding in a sleeve 52. The end of the sleeve 52 functions as a limit stop for the valve. The sleeve 52 is formed integral with a cap 48 which is also provided with an arcuate vane 54 for controlling the velocity of fluid flowing through the valve. The position of the vane can be adjusted by turning the cap in its screw-threaded mounting and set by tightening a set-screw 55. Provision for manual operation of the valve 45 is accommodated by mounting the casing 10 in a ring 24 which may be reciprocated to open and close the valve by manual rotation of a screw-threaded pusher member 31. Electrical wires 14 connected to the element 12 pass through a central bore in the member 31. If desired, a separate cooling fluid may be provided for the actuator, the valve being used to control flow of another fluid, e.g. steam, in a separate conduit.
