Abstract
1,150,086. Air cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 27 May, 1966 [4 March, 1965], No. 9360/65. Heading B7K. In a gas cushion vehicle 11 wherein the vehicle supporting cushion is contained at the sides thereof at least in part by a pair of spaced wall structures 2b depending from the vehicle body 13, each wall structure provides, when the wall deflects from the full to the dotted line position 12, for movement of the effective seal position from position 14 to position 15 along a slope #s (shown in the drawing as # applicable to any peripheral position) which is a function of the beam of the cushion, the height of the centre of gravity of the vehicle above the surface 3 and the desired stiffness in roll and which has a value:- where #s = slope of angle of locus of side seals relative to the plane of the bottom surface of the vehicle body. L<SP>1</SP># = basic roll stiffness, ignoring the effect of cushion end seals due to the movement of the centre of pressure of the cushion and the movement of the centre of gravity expressed as a percentage of the cushion beam for unit roll angle. h = height of centre of gravity of vehicle above surface in feet. b = beam of the cushion in feet. Values are specified also for the movement of cushion end seal positions, total roll stiffness and total pitch stiffness.
