Abstract
1,149,995. Surface treating glassware. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 Dec., 1967 [31 Dec., 1966], No. 68840/67. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions C4 and H1] A method of manufacturing a cathode-ray tube includes the steps of heating the tube glass window to above 350‹ C. and exposing to a gaseous sulphur compound, cooling and washing to remove the reaction product(s) formed, and subsequently forming a luminescent layer containing a ZnCdS phosphor over the treated surface with the aid of a suspension of the phosphor in a solution of an organic binder, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol. For example, a tube glass window of (in percentages by wt.) 65À3 SiO 2 , 0À5 Li 2 O, 7À4 Na 2 O, 6À8 K 2 O, 3À9 CaO, 13À2 BaO, 2À4 Al 2 O 3 , 0À3 Sb 2 O 3 and 0À2 GeO 2 is heated for 1 hour at 500‹ C. (440‹ C. also mentioned) in a flower of sulphur atmosphere which is oxidized to SO 2 and SO 3 , producing reaction products such as Na 2 SO 3 and Na 2 SO 4 which may be removed by washing with an aqueous solution containing 0À2% by wt. of sodium dodecyl sulphate.
