Abstract
1,149,647. Laminates. DOW CORNING CO. 23 Aug., 1966 [9 Sept., 1965], No. 37783/66. Heading B5N. A process for bonding (a) a thermally stable resinous polymer with aryl-containing recurring units, to (b) a solid substrate selected from siliceous materials, metallic oxides, and metals, comprises: (1) Applying to the surface of at least one of (a) and (b) a silane, (c) of the general formula or a hydrolysate thereof, where X is a hydroxyl radical or a hydrolysable atom or group, R is a hydrogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical containing not more than 7 carbon atoms, n is 1, 2 or 3, and A is selected from - COOR. -COONH 4 , C(OR) 3 , CH 2 OR, - CH 2 X<SP>1</SP>, O # -CH 2 NR<SP>1</SP> 2 , -CN, -X<SP>1</SP>, -C-NR 2 , and -NR 2 , where X<SP>1</SP> is a chlorine, bromine, or iodine atom, and R is as defined above ; (2) Contacting (a) with (b) with (c) between them while (a) is in a thermoplastic state and at least one of (a) and (b) is in a plastic state; and (3) Applying energy to the composite of (a), (b), and (c) until a bond is formed between them. A is preferably -COOH, -CH 2 Br, - CN, or and X is preferably an alkoxy radical containing less than 7 carbon atoms. The energy is applied as heat, X-rays or gamma-rays. Ingredient (a) may be polybenzimidazole and ingredient (b) is preferably glass fibre. In an example, glass fibre is treated with ingredients (c) and (a) and the resulting sheets laminated together under the action of heat and pressure. The silane (c) may be applied to the surface of (a) or (b) by dipping, brushing, or spraying. The substrate (b) may also be other siliceous material such as fibrous or crushed quartz, silica or glass powders, silicone rubber, asbestos, clay, silicon carbide, glass sheet; metallic oxides such as alumina, titania, ferric oxide, cerium oxide; and metals such as aluminium, boron, steel, copper, silver and lead in fibrous, sheet or powder forms. The substrate (a) may also be a polyoxadiazole, a polytriazole, a polyborimidazoline, a polytriazine, a polyphenoxide, a polyphenylene sulphide, a silphenyylene, a polyphenyl, a polyimide, a polyimidazolpyrrolidone or a polybenzimidazole.
