Abstract

1,149,413. Vacuum switches; arcing preventing. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 Jan., 1968 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 8551/67. Heading H1N. A high voltage circuit breaker comprises a number of vacuum switches VS connected in series and twice the number of capacitors C 1 , C 2 also connected in series, alternate points on the capacitor chain being connected through resistors R 1 to the junctions W between adjacent vacuum switches and the vacuum switches having shields SH connected by further resistors R 0 to the intermediate points on the capacitor chain. The capacitors C 1 , C 2 are of suitable value to divide the voltage between the switches as well as across individual switches. The shields may be inside or outside the envelope of the switch. Additional capacitors (C 3 ) may be connected across the pairs of capacitors C 1 , C 2 to improve the voltage distribution (Fig. 2, not shown).
