Abstract

1,149,412. Etching. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 15 Feb., 1967 [4 March, 1966], No. 7245/67. Heading B6J. Recesses are etched in a plane surface of an article, e.g. during the production of a matrix in intaglio for making a printing plate, by providing the surface with selectively etchable areas in accordance with a desired pattern, providing an open-topped container 10 of a solution 11 suitable for etching the material of which the article is made, the container having a level brim extending horizontally and being filled brimful with the solution, supporting the article 12 above the solution with its plane surface 14 disposed parallel with the surface 15 of the solution and brim, and thereafter repeatedly causing impact between the surfaces while maintaining the container brimful with solution. Article 12 may be a glass panel which has been selectively opacified by exposing it to short wave radiation through a suitable negative to render selected areas resistant to the aqueous hydrofluoric acid etching solution used. Alternatively article 12 may be of metal, which is masked with wax and etched with nitric acid solution. The level of etching solution is maintained by continuously supplying fresh solution or by re-circulating solution which has overflowed into a catch-basin. The impact between the surface of the etching solution and the article may be effected by vertical reciprocation of member 18 or the container 10, or both. The solution may be simultaneously agitated, e.g. by stirring or bubbling.
