Double length filter cigarette assemblies A carried by adjacent conveyer wheels 2, 2a are bisected by a disc knife 1 and, of the two rows of cigarettes thus formed, one row is fed by the wheels 2 into alternate flutes 7 of a conveyer drum 3 (Fig. 2, not shown) and the other row is fed by the wheels 2a via a transfer drum 13 to a conveyer drum 4, Fig. 3, from which drum 4 the cigarettes of this other row are transferred to, and turned through 180 degrees by, a rotating disc 14 having radial grooves 15, and from which disc 14 the cigarettes are transferred after turning to the drum 3 to lie between the cigarettes of the said one row to form a single row of similarly oriented cigarettes. The speeds and directions of rotation of the drums 3, 4 and the disc 14 are such that at the positions of transfer from the disc 14 each drum 3, 4 moves at a speed and in a direction substantially the same as the speed and direction of that part of the disc 14 to or from which the cigarettes are transferred.
