Abstract

1,149,244. Vibratory finishing. ROTOFINISH Ltd. 17 Aug., 1966 [26 Aug., 1965], No. 36791/65. Heading B3D. Apparatus for deburring, polishing or other surface treatment of workpieces comprises an elongated tub 1 for receiving the workpieces together with abrasive media and rotary means for so vibrating the tub that the material in the tub is given an orbital cascading movement about an axis extending longitudinally of the tub with the material piled higher against one side of the tub than against the opposite side, the tub having adjacent one end thereof an outlet opening 5 through which the material can progressively discharge as additional material is introduced into the opposite end of the tub; the apparatus is characterized in that the means for vibrating the tub can be driven in either direction and that the outlet opening is disposed in one side wall of the tub with its lower edge at a level intermediate the levels of the surface of the material adjacent the two side walls of the tub, whereby with the vibratory means operating in one direction the material is retained in the tub, while with the vibratory means operating in the reverse direction the material is discharged through the outlet opening. The tub has secured to its underside a vibrator (4) comprising an eccentrically weighted shaft and a reversible electric motor. The outlet opening 5 communicates with a discharge shoot 6 beneath which is the lower end of a shallow trough 7 extending alongside the tub and sloping upwardly at about 10 degrees to the horizontal. At the upper end of the trough a gravity shoot 8 leads back into the other end of the tub. The trough is supported on springs (9) and coupled to two contra-rotating electric motors (10) which vibrate it so that material therein is conveyed to its upper end. A screen 11 mounted above the lower end of the trough so as to partake of its vibration retains discharged workpieces which are picked off by hand or discharged through a shoot, the media passing into the trough and being returned to the tub. The screen 11 may be omitted; the workpieces may then be picked out of the trough by hand or removed by a magnetic separator.
