Abstract

1,148,508. Lewis acid catalysed lactam polymerization. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 July, 1966 [26 July, 1965], No. 31778/65. Heading C3R. Lactams having 7 or more carbon atoms in the ring are polymerized by heating them in an inert atmosphere in the presence of 0À4-30 mole per cent of a Lewis acid selected from BF 3 , SuCl 4 , SiCl 4 , TiCl 4 , SbCl 5 , AlCl 3 , FeCl 3 or CuCl 2 . Lactams specified are caprylactam and dodecanolactam. The lactam may be dissolved in a solvent, e.g. benzene, and any water present removed azeotropically before 0À4-30 mole per cent of Lewis acid is added. Alternatively the Lewis acid may be added to the lactam per se above or below its melting point. 1-10 mole per cent of a viscosity stabilizer, e.g. caprolactam or acetanilide may also be added. If the solvent is a high boiling one it may be retained during polymerization-otherwise it is distilled off. The polymerization may be at 190-310‹ C. under an N 2 atmosphere. The products may be made into fibres and films.
